When kwashiorkor was first described by Dr Cecily Williams as she worked as an expatriate
doctor in the 1930’s at Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital (PML) in Accra, it was the
disease of the “deposed” child. It was associated with a maize diet and an abrupt stop to breast feeding following the onset of pregnancy.
